5 Steps to Overcoming Your Limiting Beliefs

Beliefs are the lens through which we see ourselves, other people and life in general.

Our beliefs determine what our lives look like. As Tony Robbins said, “What we can or cannot do, what we consider possible or impossible, is rarely a function of our true capability. It is more likely a function of our beliefs about who we are.”

In order to achieve your goals, you must overcome your limiting beliefs that are preventing you from doing so.

These 5 steps will help you overcome your limiting beliefs:

1. Identify an area of your life in which you are not getting the results you would like.

Examples: Work, Health, Financial, Relationship

2. Identify a limiting belief that is hindering your success.

Examples:

“I am not important.”

“I don’t deserve more than I have.”

“There is no point in dreaming big. It only leads to disappointment.”

“I am powerless.”

“I can’t earn a living doing what I love.”

“I don’t have time to pursue my goals.”

“I am too old.”

“I can’t change, this is just the way I am.”

“I don’t know what God wants me to do.”

“I don’t know where to start.”

“I am afraid of trying and failing.”

3. Challenge the belief.

a. Ask: “What pain has this belief caused me in the past?”

Examples: Frustration, stress, lack of fulfillment.

b. Ask: “What pain will this belief cause me in the future?”

Examples: Frustration, stress, lack of fulfilment.

c. Ask: “What pleasure would I experience if I replaced this limiting belief with an empowering one?”

Examples: Peace, satisfaction, fulfillment.

4. Replace the limiting belief with an empowering belief.

Examples:

Limiting Belief: I am not important.

Empowering Belief: God knows the number of hairs on my head.

Supporting Bible Verse: And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.(Luke 12:7)

Limiting Belief: There is no point in dreaming big. It only leads to disappointment.

Empowering Belief: I am the head and not the tail. I am the top and not the bottom.

Supporting Bible Verse: And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you shall only go up and not down, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, being careful to do them, (Deuteronomy 28:13)

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (James 1:22)

Having replaced the limiting belief with an empowering one, it is time to take action.

Ask yourself:

a. What action will I take?

b. When will I take action?

Example: I will improve my skills by taking an advanced software development course by October August 2, 2021. I will meet with my mentor by August 15, 2021. I will update my resume by September 1, 2021.I will apply for my dream position by October 1, 2021.
